Training

Training to be a Community First Responder can be very rewarding to say the least. If you are worried about how much training you will have to do and you are feeling that some experience is a necessary then you would be wrong.
Firstly you don't have to have had any previous First Aid Training or experience at all, although if you are a member of St John Ambulance or Red Cross or you have even got a First Aid at Work Certificate this always give you a heads up.

Both your initial 2 full day training days and regular monthly updates are supplied by South Central Ambulance Service free of charge. All they ask is that as a responder you do attend a few updates per annum. This is important and helps you stay in touch with other members from other groups and keeps you updated with new techniques. It also gives you a chance to practice your skills on manikins on a regular basis.

During our monthly training evenings we are asked if we would like to learn more about particular subjects. The picture on the left shows one of our Community Responder Training Support Officers (Ian McClure) teaching us about anatomy of the heart. Understanding basic anatomy helps build on our knowledge and certain medical conditions can be explained via these talks. We are not sent to all medical conditions i.e. Trauma, but generally are sent on the life threatening calls, for example Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Heart Attacks. Understanding the body and how these conditions are caused helps us to deal with emergencies more effectively.

Training in a real emergency enviroment - This case was in the Ambulance Station itself.

The training is carried out at one of our local ambulance station venues by specially trained Paramedic instructors. Within Berkshire we have Officers who look after the Community Responders and are trained to teach all aspects of responding. Having Paramedics and Ambulance technicians teaching us comes with it years of experience on a range of duties within the Ambulance Service including one Officer who has spent years on the Air Ambulance. So the training we receive could not be any better. The guys who teach us are all great and have a superb sense of humour, which helps when you have to go training after a long day at work.
